Planning

Demographic
The audience I will be targeting will be both females and males aged 18-25 who are interested in Indie music. I will aim my magazine at social group B and C1 as I think these are the social groups more likely to listen to Indie magazines.

  • Demographic interests

Initial Ideas

Genre of Music
I will be following an Indie genre of music as most people in my target audience age range listen to Indie music at the moment. Indie is a widely known popular music worldwide recently however I don't think there are many popular Indie magazines so I want to create one for this gap in the market.

Layout & Font
I want to create an Indie music magazine where there will be a large masthead like the music magazines in my research, a reoccurring font just used in different sizes and one where the cover image is the main focus of the cover page.

Colours
The main colours I will use will be black, red and white possibly with a slight bit of yellow as this follows the conventions of typical music magazines.

Cover Lines
I will use one main cover line that will be interesting and Indie related then smaller cover lines down the sides of the cover that will feature band names that will be of interest to my target audience.

Cover Star
As I cannot get access to a famous music artist like I found most music magazines have in their conventions, I will use a model of my own and make he/she look famous and Indie fashioned, I may try and include an acoustic guitar or another Indie instrument into the picture to make it more clear that my magazine is music related.

Title
I want to use a title that is bold, loud and memorable, perhaps an onomatopoeia so that it links in with the music genre.

Fonts
I will use a reoccurring font throughout my cover page and ensure that there is a house style and it looks professional.

Size & Amount of Text
The size of my text will depend on the importance of what it says, if its a big story or a title I will make the font larger and if its less important the font will be smaller.

Initial Idea Cover Page Templates

These initial ideas all follow the conventions of the magazine conventions I did in my research:
  • The layout of these initial idea follows my research as they all use a typical music magazine layout with a large masthead and a centred cover model.
  • The fonts all follow a house style with colour and all of the font is the same throughout the cover as this is what I found in the conventions of my music magazine research.
  • The main colours of all of these templates are red, white and black with a slight bit of yellow.
  • The main cover lines I will use will all be featuring well known indie artists that a wide audience of people would know. The main cover lines usually at the bottom half of the magazine in the conventions I have found so I have done so in my initial ideas also and the smaller cover lines down the sides of the cover.
  • The conventions of cover stars is that they are all well known celebrities but as I will not be able to include a famous artist on my cover I will use a model and make them look famous and feature them either with a musical instrument or something that links
  • exclamation mark at the end. The title will be something music themed, perhaps an onomatopoeia.
  • There wont be a huge amount of text on my cover as this follows the conventions I found in my magazine research. The more important the text, the larger the font will be, the title will be there largest and the main cover line the next biggest, then the other cover lines will be smaller.
